Student Action with Farmworkers is one of 3 winners of the 2009 Nonprofit Sector Stewardship Award, given out annually by the North Carolina Center for Nonprofits at its statewide conference.
According to the Center, the Award is given "to pay tribute to organizations whose practices create the excellence that is a hallmark of North Carolina's nonprofit sector."
Cris Rivera, SAF Board Chair; Esteban Echeverria, Board Vice Chair; Irene Godinez, Board Member; Raul Granados, Migrant Youth Director; and Melinda Wiggins, Executive Director were present to accept the award.
Student Action with Farmworkers (SAF) brings students and farmworkers together to learn about each other's lives, share resources and skills, improve conditions for farmworkers, and build diverse coalitions working for social change. Founded in 1992, SAF gives farmworkers and their families access to health, legal, education, and assistance in voicing their concerns. It also provides internships to college students, many of whom are the children of farmworkers, to help them develop leadership skills while promoting awareness of problems such as pesticide health risks, poor housing, and low wages.
"We are honoring Student Action with Farmworkers for its exemplary work to collaborate with other nonprofits, to ensure that its organization has the capacity to achieve results, and to use the arts as it engages the public in learning about farmworkers' issues," said Jane Kendall, NC Center for Nonprofits president.
Founded in 1990, the N.C. Center For Nonprofits helps nonprofit board and staff members to lead and manage their organizations effectively, make the best possible use of their resources, and collaborate with other groups to improve the quality of life in North Carolina. The Center is a coalition of almost 1,600 nonprofit organizations of all types and sizes in all 100 counties of North Carolina. It serves as a statewide network for nonprofit board and staff members, an information center on effective nonprofit organizational practices, and an advocate for the nonprofit sector as a whole.
