The UNC Center for Civil Rights is committed to the advancement of civil rights and social justice, especially in the American South. The Center's mission is to (1) empower excluded minority and lower-income communities through outreach, mobilization and civic engagement, (2) improve public education by achieving diverse, high-performing schools for low-income and minority students, (3) strengthen democratic participation by protecting voting rights, and (4) train the next generation of civil rights lawyers by teaching law students and Center fellows the art of social justice advocacy.
With emphasis on housing and community development, education, economic justice, and voting rights, the Center fosters empirical and analytical research, hosts student activities and convenes faculty, visiting scholars, policy advocates and practicing attorneys to confront legal and social issues of greatest concern to racial and ethnic minorities, the poor and, other potential beneficiaries of civil rights advances.

Dream Fund Project

The Dream Fund provides support in the Center's efforts to harness the moral authority and organizational capacity of the higher education community to challenge increasing racial segregation at the K-12 level. The project seeks to induce selective public and private colleges and universities to adopt new admissions requirements which would encourage students to pursue diverse high school experiences where possible. In so doing, the Center is leveraging the power of colleges and universities to affect parental understanding of the importance of diversity at the K-12 level. Outreach and dialogue with local educational officials are central components of this initiative.
