The WeCAN (Working to Empower Community Action Now) Coalition, sponsored by Missouri Jobs with Justice, brings together a broad cross-section of faith groups, community organizations, students, labor, and businessmen and women in Missouri working to preserve affirmative action. These statewide groups came together in 2007 with the specific goal of defeating the anti-affirmative action ballot initiative propose for the November 2008 statewide ballot. The WeCAN Coaltion's goal is to work together to ensure that Missouri's diverse communities, workplaces, and educational systems are protected from outside interests who want to change the state's Constitution for political gain.
Dream Fund Project
The WeCAN (Working to Empower Community Action Now) Coalition receives Dream Fund support towards the utilization of strategic communications to further develop the Coalition's infrastructure in Missouri. Coalition members work with key partners to provide communication trainings to community spokespersons on the importance of equal opportunity and race and gender conscious policies in creating opportunity for women and people of color. The WeCAN Coalition is developing a "Campaign Case Study" and "Think before you Ink" Manual to document its campaign strategies during the recent ballot initiative campaign.
