Los Angeles Alliance for a New Economy

The Los Angeles Alliance for a New Economy (LAANE) is recognized as a national authority on issues affecting the working poor and an innovator in the fight against working poverty. Combining a vision of social justice with a practical approach to social change, LAANE integrates research, policy advocacy, community organizing and communications into a model that has been replicated in cities across the country.
For the past decade, LAANE has been in the forefront of the nation's most dynamic economic justice movement. LAANE spearheaded the defeat of Wal-Mart's ballot initiative in Inglewood, led Los Angeles' groundbreaking living wage campaign and pioneered the use of community benefits agreements, a new approach to economic development that has become a national model for civic empowerment. Our campaigns to transform conditions in key low-wage industries have led to significant improvements for tens of thousands of working men and women.

Dream Fund Project

LAANE received Dream Fund support to continue its work with the ten-year multi-billion dollar Master Plan to renovate the Los Angeles Airport (LAX). The community benefits agreement (CBA) won by LAANE allocated millions of dollars to job training and targeted hiring programs that benefitted people of color and women from the low-income, primarily African American and Latino communities adjacent to the airport. Environmental and health provisions included in the CBA also ensured that air and noise pollution resulting from the development would be minimized, while significantly reducing pollution from existing sources.
