Firelight Media is a New York City and San Francisco Bay Area-based independent production and outreach company dedicated to using media to spur understanding, discussion, and action that will contribute to the struggle for social justice. Firelight Media has become the preeminent source of film on the African American experience, covering topics ranging from civil rights icons and hip-hop's critics to a capella ensembles and Black entrepreneurs. Since its founding in 1998, Firelight Media has produced over 15 hours of award-winning, primetime, non-fiction film for broadcast on cable and public television. Firelight's work has received critical acclaim and won numerous awards-including primetime Emmy, Peabody, Sundance Film Festival, Writers' Guild of America, and International Documentary Association-and had an unprecedented four films in competition at Sundance in six years.

Dream Fund Project

With support from the Dream Fund, Firelight Media created a digital toolkit that addresses the history and ongoing debates surrounding affirmative action. A companion educational DVD/CDROM entitled Arise: The Battle over Affirmative Action helped individuals and organizations to find ways to put their time, money, and heart into moving affirmative action forward.
