The Federation of Southern Cooperatives (FSC) strives toward the development of self-supporting democratic, humane and livable communities through education, outreach strategies and programs that assist in land retention, development and the establishment of cooperatives and credit unions. Systems of credit and cooperative organizations are used as a collective strategy to increase income and enhance economic self-sufficiency for rural African Americans in general, and rural and family farmers in particular.
The Federation of Southern Cooperatives does this with an active and democratic involvement in poor areas across the South, through education and outreach strategies which support low-income people in molding their communities to become more humane and livable. FSC assists in the development of cooperatives and credit unions as a collective strategy to create economic self-sufficiency.
Dream Fund Project
The Federation of Southern Cooperatives has received Dream Fund support to study issues of poverty brought about by the new barriers to the full participation of marginalized, rural black farmers in the systems of agricultural credit, markets and other avenues. Increasing access to capital will open business and career opportunities to rural farmers. The Federation is centering its work in the rural South regions of Mississippi, Georgia, South Carolina and Alabama. The Federation of Southern Cooperatives seeks to open access to USDA services and loans to 300 additional low income families. The project aims to identify ways of mobilizing farmers towards gaining access, and participation in agricultural credit programs.
