The mission of the Chicago Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, Inc. is to promote and protect civil rights, particularly the civil rights of poor, minority and disadvantaged people in order to facilitate their participation in the social, economic and political systems of our nation. The Committee's direction is community driven: that is, the agenda and priorities are determined in consultation with the myriad of community-based organizations in Chicago addressing the results of virulent poverty, entrenched segregation, insufficient public services, and other barriers to opportunity faced by communities of color and women in Chicago.
The Chicago Lawyers' Committee maintains a focus in a broad range of civil rights and economic justice matters. These include: hate crime prevention and response; employment discrimination litigation; affordable housing development efforts, fair housing complaints and fair mortgage-lending advocacy and litigation; and support for a broad range of economic development activity in Chicago, including free legal services to individuals using small businesses/micro-enterprises as strategies to achieve self-sufficiency. Transactional legal services, involving tax, corporate, and real estate law, are provided to nonprofit community-based organizations.

Dream Fund Project

The Chicago Lawyers' Committee works with the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund to identify and dismantle structures of racial, ethnic and sexual inequality which prevent the inclusion and economic progress of African Americans and Latinos in the Chicago area. Often, tensions between Latinos and African Americans are borne out of the idea that both groups must compete for limited resources. The Dream Fund supports Chicago Lawyers' Committee's work in opening up avenues of cooperation that enables Latinos and African Americans to work together on a common set of issues, thereby strengthening their ability to overcome the cultural barriers and mistrust that often inhibit their mutual collaboration.
